UPDATE: Unfortunately, ACAP has lost its United Way Funding for this program as that agency has realigned its priorities for 2007-2009 with other areas of services. Fees for our 8-week classes will increase to $150.00 per person for GP, EC, and PT in order to cover the costs for operation. We deeply regret the hardship this brings to our families.

PLAY & LEARN Groups

Through a “FLIGHT TO THE FUTURE” grant from the Boeing Corporation, ACAP is developing a new program.

Our first “Play and Learn” groups project is a new effort targeted to support young Spanish speaking families and Spanish speaking homes providing care for young children in Auburn.

The Play & Learn Project is designed to reach Spanish speaking young parents of young children, family friend and neighbors child caregivers and Latino foster families: ACAP is targeting an area around Auburn elementary schools with large and growing Latino populations -- helping families and childcare providers assure children are ready for school. We are targeting January 2008 for startup of the first group – a morning program, 1 day a week. Location is yet to be determined.  As the project moves forward, we will outreach to other times -- late afternoons or evenings-- and locations also.  Children may attend with a variety of family members expanding the benefits to caregivers and children.  These drop-in programs will be located at neighborhood sites throughout the community at no cost, and within walking distance to families and caregivers.   Registration is required as class sizes are limited.  Contact Rachel at 253-939-0870 for information and to register.

The Program will provide the best components of ACAP's APPLE classes: Growth & Development, Positive Parenting / Discipline, Parent-Child Communication, Foundations for Early Learning / Preparation for Public Schools, the Value of Play, Toys and Games that Teach, Nutrition, Health and Safety, Community Resources, among a few possibilities. Caregiver and Child will attend together providing the parent/adult education component and play groups for children. We will use the Guiding Principles and Curriculum Guidelines from the Play & Learn Network and curriculum materials developed through Childcare resources.

The Group Leader is a Spanish speaking woman from South America with a degree in Psychology and a specialization in Parent and Child Relations with experience in play and learn groups in her native country.

The Schedule: The 2 hour learning program will consist of a flexible free play time where adult and child meet others get acquainted for "community building," a circle time which may involve a discussion for adults either in group or separate,  a parent-child interactive project, a snack time and closure. The Group Leader will provide the parenting / early learning materials formally and informally, role modeling, 1 on 1 with parents, through guest "speakers" / professionals, through media materials, or group discussions & presentations. Content will be around core areas and flexible / emergent to meet the wishes/ needs of the group.

Expected Outcomes:  We expect to conduct play and learn group sessions of 2 program hours at least 40 weeks over a year. Our goal is a maximum of 10 –12 adults per group.   Adults (FFN caregivers, relatives, foster parents, and young parents) will increase their knowledge of growth & development, how children learn, positive discipline & communication techniques with children, resources available in the community to support families & children's early learning. Caregivers will learn how they can (1) help prepare children for successful school experiences and (2) help parents be more involved in the child's education. The groups will build connections, friendships and a circle of mutual support among people who care for children.

Children involved will have opportunity to explore a new learning environment, to develop social, emotional and communication skills in a group setting outside their home.
