FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: APPLE PARENTING
FACTS
APPLE Parenting is a program offered by ACAP Child and Family services.
APPLE offers five types of parenting classes, designed to reduce the
incidence of child abuse and neglect.
- Parenting Young Children, Early Childhood STEP
- General Parenting STEP
- General Parenting STEP in Spanish
- Parenting Teenagers STEP
- Building Young Families Program for Teen Parents
Classes are held in the cities of Auburn, Kent, Federal Way and NE
Tacoma. The instructors are highly qualified and experienced. They work
directly with children as child and family therapists, school counselors,
and social workers.
WHO MAY ATTEND
Classes are open to anyone who wishes to attend a parenting class.
The APPLE Parenting program is court accepted everywhere. The program
is very helpful to grandparents, foster parents and relatives who
are raising children.

FEES
APPLE charges $150.00 per person for Early Childhood, General Parenting, and
Parenting Teens. The classes are available to the general public. Because of
foundation grants ACAP has received from Group Health Community Foundation,
The Norcliffe Foundation and others, the fees for Beginning Young Families
and General Parenting in Spanish are only $10.00 per person for the entire
program.
CERTIFICATES OF COMPETION
APPLE Parenting classes are accepted in all
Washington State courts.
Attendees must attend and appropriately participate in seven out
of eight classes to be eligible to receive a Certificate of Completion.
Classes meet one night a week for 8 weeks, 2 hours a session for
a total of 16 hours or two nights a week for 4 weeks, 2 hours a session
for a total of 16 hours. Apple Parenting classes are court accepted
and confidential.
APPLE PARENTING PROGRAM CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
GENERAL PARENTING
This class is designed for parents of children age 5 through
12 years. The curriculum is the research based S.T.E.P. curriculum
(Systematic Training for Effective Parenting). Topics covered include:
- Child development and guidelines for the parent
for each developmental stage.
- Self esteem and communication
- Problem solving,
discipline, alternatives to spanking.
- Stress, anger management and self-care
- Divorce,
blended families, and step parenting
GENERAL PARENTING AND PARENTING TEENAGERS
IN SPANISH
Bilingual, bicultural instructors use the STEP curriculum in Spanish.
EARLY CHILDHOOD S.T.E.P.
This class is designed for parents of children age birth - 5 years.
PARENTS OF TEENAGERS S.T.E.P
This class is designed to cover topics and issues faced by parents
with children ages 12 - 17 years.
*NEW CLASS -- FALL 2006: BUILDING YOUNG FAMILIES
PROGRAM This class is designed for Teen Parents of children age birth - 4
years. We are working with King County Public Health Department and
others to support our youngest parents. Classes will be offered in
Federal Way beginning in late 2007.

The United Way of King County supports the APPLE Parenting Program.
Other funding comes from the cities of Auburn, and Federal Way, and
by donations from individuals and foundation grants.
